During the first half of the twentieth century, parades and horse shows held in conjunction with rodeos, fiestas and fairs throughout the West fuelled a demand for fancy, embroidered saddlery. A second generation lover and owner of Harley Davidson motorcycles, David Losoya, an airbrush artist from Artesia, New Mexico, says, "If I was a biker in the 19th Century, this is what I would ride." "Woodland Hunter came to me through research and study of the northern plains tribes," says Kevin Kilhoffer, a native of western Oklahoma who studies, draws and paints the American West. "I found records of a Franciscan missionary stationed at a fur trade fort dating back to 1836, and in his notes he described a Teton Sioux warrior who rode into the fort wearing a magnificent war shirt adorned with scalps and wonderful art work decorating his horse." Some say the wonderful patterns act as camouflage in the tall grass, but others say the stripes confuse predators. When a lion sees a herd of zebras, it is difficult for her to distinguish one animal from another in order to single out a potential victim.
